It has been awhile! I am in the middle of a move so time has been sparse. But big things are coming in the future. Denckash seems to get himself in a little trouble in this one! Will be make it??
Scene 11 - Mushroom Hunting - 2FB - 10:15 am
Denckash heads east at a slow pace to keep an eye out for a cave in the side of a hill.
CL=4, Chaos Roll 1d10=5, no modifications.
Denckash continues to follow the stream east for about two hours, as it cuts through this portion of the hills. He keeps a keen eye out for any strange openings. Perception (Wis) DC14, d20+3-2(for weather)=15, he finds it!
Random encounters: d100=23, yes!
Using 200 Non-Combat encountersL d20=6
As he approaches the mouth of the cave, he sees a group of humanoids in the distance.
They only stood about 90 ft away, but Denckash, being over six foot tall and a bright crimson, stuck out amongst the scenery.
"You out there!" he heard a voice call. He faced the direction the voice was coming from. He could tell they were beckoning him over. Out of sheer curiousity, he honored their request and made way to them. As he got closer he could make out details. It turns out, they were a group of Lizardfolk. One was wearing an elaborate mask made of feathers with matching armbands. However, the figure to the left of the feathered one, stood a satyr wearing a crown of flowers with bells on its hooves. If he weren't mistaken…was this a wedding?
"Oh a DRAGONBORN." One of the creature's shrieked with a toothy grin. "The perfect witness"
Denckash was taken aback for a moment. Why were lizardfolk meeting up with satyrs on this plane, in this part of the realm, located centrally in these hills.
"Witness to what, precisely?" He asked
"For the wedding! Sit!" the Lizard hissed
"Okay…sure…"
He sat, not sure why, but he did. The Lizardfolk that beckoned him stood between the couple and faced them. His headdress was more elaborate that the grooms, with feathers coming out from behind large scales. Shells hung from around a leather armband that adorned a fairly large bicep. Denckash intuited her to be a shaman or medicine woman of some kind. She begins to speak in her rough, gravelly voice.
"We gather to wed Urk & Niki!" She hissed
Ah, so he was right, this was a wedding. It begged the question about why a Satyr and a Lizardfolk would wed, though. They didn't seem malicious or out for blood so he watched on. The shaman raised above her head a golden disc, she handed it to the satyr who pressed it against her forehead, she then handed it to her partner who did the same before handing it back to the shaman. They both said a few words to each other. The Satyr was poetic while her Lizardfolk groom was…less than so. After they had their respective vows stated the Shaman bound their hands together, blesses them, and faces Denckash.
"Dragonborn! Do you witness this marriage!?" She asked abruptly
"Uh..yeah, sure do. Witnessed the heck out of it." He replied, still a bit confused as to why he was there.
"Good! You two are married! Back to the swamps!" the shaman stated, dismissing the two. They all began to walk southbound, hand in hand.
"Okay…that was a thing that happened." Denckash watched as they left and then headed towards the mouth of the cave.
End Scene CL=4, 1pm
Update: NPCs from Wedding
Scene 11- Into the Depths…kind of - 2FB - 1pm - Day 2
Denckash stands before the mouth of the cave, preparing to enter
CL-4, Chaos Roll 1d10=6, no modification
For this, I will be using the 6d12 system to explore caverns (rooms or chambers) in this cave. I will explain the mechanics when I get there.
Entrance: Opening in side of hill
Combat: 10%, d100=28, no!
Clue: 15%, d100=26, no!
Tunnel entrance: d20=15, Entrance tunnel is bisected into a chasm
Chasm: 100 ft wide & 60 ft deep, leads to underground lake, Feature: stone bridge across the cavern
Denckash enters the cavern, he notices the tunnel leads up to a massive cavern about 60 ft deep and 100 ft wide with a stone bridge crossing the chasm. Below is a large cavern.
Is it lit? Unlikely 15%, d100=11, yes! Random event!
Random Event: d100= Move toward a thread, Thread: Wanted: Belso Brambleheel, Subject/Action: Oppose/A project
Surprisingly, the tunnels were well lit. Something must live here or at least have been here. He notices footprints leading up to the chasm's bridge, they looked to be about the size of a halflings! Yes, that is exactly what it was! They were smaller than a humans but not as small as a child's, which was their relative size. His halfling may not have even been in Filopi, this being the complete opposite where the lazy guards of Cokree would find him, almost right under their noses. Good for him! He could also see the cavern below! Cavern: Square, 50 ft by 50 ft w/ 2 features: humming noise and rubble and debris
Using Passive Perception 14
The cavern itself wasn't much to look at, it was littered with rubble and debris. There was a strange humming sound emitted throughout.
Now, I could just walk across, but I like being that guy.
Is the bridge well cared for? 50/50 35%, d100=35, yes!
Oh wow, something is here or was here. This is awesome.
Denckash begins to cross the bridge with no issue.
Are there walls or hand rails? Likely 55%, d100=2, exceptional yes!
There were a raised fence going along the side of the bridge making for easy passage. If something didn't live here, they were smart enough to build.
For the generation of this cavern, I will be incorporating the Cavern/Cave generator from The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox pt 2 as well as the 6d12 method to trigger encounters, traps, or clues.
Denckash crossed the bridge with ease, making it to the other side of the chasm. The tunnel continues!
The tunnel continues for 20 ft and turns left at a 45 degree angle and continues 10, Features: Sulphureous odor
The tunnel continued for about 20 ft before turning left and continuing on. A sulphureous odor mingles in this part of the tunnel.
So now I can introduce the 6d12 method! This will be used for both passageways and cavern chambers. For passages like this, I roll 6d12, one for the following categories: Monsters, Clues, Environmental Features, NPC, Treasure, & Random Events. Essentially, it’s a microversion of hexmap generator! I rolled 10,9,7,5,10,1. This means nothing triggered. The DCs for these are very high for passages but a little lower for cavern rooms. This passage is empty. If nothing is triggered, I simply won't mention it.
Next branch of tunnel: d20=4, a sinkhole opens up in the tunnel, it is about 10 ft.
A sinkhole opened up in front of Denckash, he would have to try and jump it.
DC15 Athletics or Acrobatics check,
1d20+3(Athletics)=21, success! +5xp
He ran back and leaped across the hole effortless. After regaining his balance he continued his trek through the tunnel.
Tunnel: Cave in. Must move rocks to get through.
Denckash came to a cave in. Rocks blocked his way. He would have to move rocks to get through.
Are they big rocks? 50/50 35%, d100=63, no
The cave in is mainly smaller rocks, the size of a melon at most, and the size of his fist at least. He had an idea! He could fill in the sinkhole with these rocks!
Is there enough rocks to fill in the sinkhole? Unlikely 20%, d100=81, no!
Upon closer inspection, the sinkhole was far too deep to be filled with these rocks, but it didn't stop him from tossing the rocks in there. It took him about an hour, but he was able to clear it enough to make it through.
Time: 2pm
Tunnel: Another 10 ft sinkhole, DC15 Athletics Check
Another sinkhole, he felt more and more that something was trying to keep him out.
Athletics: d20+3=15, success! +5 xp
He leaps and makes it across again without issue.
Tunnel: Chasm! Drops 90ft, tunnel continues on the other side, it is 70 ft across. Drops down into tunnel.
Welp….100 ft down, 70 ft across and a tunnel on the bottom.
Passive Perception 14 Denckash looks down into the cavern and sees a light from a tunnel about 90 ft down. Scaffolding from an old mining operation lay dormant.
DC15 Nature (Wis) Check to see what was being mined, d20+1=11, fail, he is unable to see what was being mined
DC15 Perception (Wis) to see who was mining, d20+3=10, fail
It isn't apparent who was mining or what was being mined.
Is there scaffolding that he could walk across to get across the cavern? Likely 50%, d100=82, no, there is not.
Can he use the scaffolding to climb down the cavern? Likely 50%, d100=53, no
Drat, I was kind of counting on those. But, not all hope is lost.
Is it scalable? 50/50 35%, d100=67, no.
This may be the end of the line, but I really want to go down into that cavern. If our halfling is in there or the mushrooms, that would be just grand, two birds with one stone. Hmm….
Are there any ladders to climb down? 50/50 35%, d100=92, exceptional no. Not only are there no ladders going down, there is no way down that is assisted and it is a straight drop.
Denckash realized he isn't going to make it down there on his own, he would have to return with climbing gear. This adventure was, seemingly, not letting him accomplish much of anything. He hated to break his word, no matter how much the concerns of these people had little to do with him. After some contemplation, he decided to head out of the cavern and head east. Maybe he could find Filopi still. So he turns around to try and traverse the sinkholes once more.
Sinkhole 2: Athletics (Str) DC15, d20+3=17, success! +5xp
Sinkhole 1: Athletics (Str) DC15, d20+3=6, fail! Dmg: d6+1 x d6=15 fall damage (-5hp)
Death Saving Throw 1: d20=18, Pass! 1-0
Death Saving Throw 2: d20=14, Pass! 2-0
Death Saving Throw 3: d20=5, Fail! 2-1
Death Saving Throw 4: d20=9, Fail! 2-2
Death Saving Throw 5: d20=10, Pass!
Denckash is stable, he regains 1 hp after 4 hours
Denckash successfully jumps over the second sinkhole, but barely. A little winded, he comes up to the first sinkhole. Per usual, he took a few steps back, ran at full speed, and jumped. Unfortunately, he jumped a little too soon and he plummeted into a cavern below. He would lay on the floor at the bottom of the sinkhole for four hours before stirring from his unconsciousness.
End Scene CL=5, Day 2, 6:15pm
Good gravy, that was close. This is a cavern, so not much life could be supported, right? RIGHT!?
Ah! It felt like he was so close too! And now it feels like he had to turn around for nothing!
